In the past, many exciting theses have been written by students at Philotech. The most recent thesis dealt with the localisation and interpretation of traffic signs and traffic lights with a model vehicle.
For this bachelor thesis a framework was created, which enables our vehicle to recognize traffic signs. The framework is embedded in an existing software environment with the name “Philobot”. It can recognize signs in real time while driving. It is implemented in an existing Robot Operating System environment and can run autonomously on the vehicle. Via an external interface the user can customize its functionality and stop it, if necessary. The program was designed in a modular way, so that the recognition function can be updated for more complex recognition methods in the future.
